One particular time in my life my mother showed me divine kindness. It was when I was six months pregnant with my third child. Christmas was coming and the nights were getting shorter and shorter. By 4:30 the sun was setting.
Our house was in the midst of a remodel and the kitchen had been demolished. The refrigerator was moved outside under an eaves, next to the door to the dining room. Every night I would go outside to get the milk to make cocoa for my children’s nighttime drink. I caught a chill that produced a fever. My first daughter caught my cold and we began to decline into illness. My fever raged on, weakening me. We were bed ridden. We took over-the-counter meds and homeopathics. After a few days I noticed I was losing weight; 10 lbs. and I was 6 mos. pregnant!
My relationship with my mother had deteriorated and we saw little of one another at this time. I broke down and called her. She said she would make some chicken soup and bring it over the next day. When she arrived, I lay weary on the living room couch with my little daughter. Both my mother and adopted father entered my house to find us withered from infection. I was so weak I couldn’t get up from the couch so, after my mother put the soup in a pot on a makeshift hotplate set up on a rack in my dining room, she sat down beside me. For the first and only time, my mother touched my back sympathetically, stroking me in a circular motion bringing me great comfort.
Thank you mama.
For three weeks now, my mother lay in a coma on life support.
Yesterday, May 9th, my first daughter gave birth to my first grandson.
Be Well and Love One Another,

Dear Donna, I will say a prayer for both you and your Mom. I am so sorry to hear about your poor Mom! The cycle of life continues with your Grandson. What a blessing he will be for you. Congratulations on your Grandson! Thinking of you.
Hello Donna,
As we get older all things will change. In the end though, our lives will be filled with more laughter than tears. We will only remember the good times that we shared together. We are all society’s children.

I’m so sorry to hear about your mother. I know it’s not easy at this point dealing with her illness; I lost my mother 27 years ago after a 6-month battle with cancer and while she was never in a coma, it was still not easy watching her decline until the end finally came. My prayers are with you and your family.
And congratulations on your new grandson!
