Lira, Spain

8 years ago a massive oil spill paralyzed this little fishing village. Before the spill, caused by a tanker called Prestige, too many fishing boats exploited the resources from it’s very abundant waters. Generations of fishermen realized their young preferred pursuing a new life of education.

Today the waters have healed and the number of fisherman has been reduced to less than a decade before, but they are more productive and respectful to the bounties they harvest. A new appreciation and awareness arose from a tragedy. Could this be what we are looking at for in our Gulf of Mexico?

Oil Spill in Lira, Spain

Hey BP, don’t you spill on me

Hey BP, don't you spill on me
Your tunnel vision is now a catastrophe.
Birds covered in oil
They can't fly no more
They can't breathe no more
They can't live no more
Our sea life has become a burial ground
Your business has cornered the market
Not just the fuel in our gas tanks
But the medicine we swallow
From a cup made of plastic
Petroleum has monopolized our lives
Made us dependent on a resource
We all knew was coming to an end
So, what's next? Nuclear!!!
What about the waste?
Ask my friend Al
Who was a nuclear engineer
If he thinks nuclear waste
Is something for the human race
So, the President says to pray
You know, I believe in verticality
It's the first sensible thing
Anyone has said
Who has the answers?
Certainly a power bigger than all of us
I say, bow down to Mother Nature
Be humble to Father Sky
Ask for Higher Wisdom to guide us
The Truth will show us the Way

A Night Out

I went dancing recently with my husband and my girlfriend. The music was provided by my friend’s favorite local dance band who has a lead flamenco guitarist. My husband wanted to leave and asked my friend to bring me home. After he left a young guy with golden hair down to his shoulders came over to our table. He wanted to dance with “us”. My girlfriend and I were flattered by his proposal and agreed to dance sometime later in the evening.  After a while my friend and I got up to dance and guess who joined us? He raised his shirt and rubbed his belly – then he undulated – what do you think!!! Well, I asked him how old he was and he said 43. I told him my son is turning 41 this month. He said, “you’re f%#@ing kidding me!” Then he sort of freaked out and the music stopped. I decided it was time to go home and we left. Wow, the testosterone was so high at 9pm! Definitely a happening place for swingin’ singles, but not for the likes of me. When I got home I told my husband about my experience and asked him to please never leave me again in a place like that!

A Sea of Faces and Cellphones

75,000 people peacefully crowded into the main stage arena at the Coachella Music Festival to witness a new ‘good vibration’ called Atoms for Peace. Taking the stage were my son Joey and his mates Thom Yorke, Nigel Godrich, Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers) and Brazilian percussionist, Mauro Refosco. Our spirits were elevated to new heights when the music began. Thom announced, “we’ll be performing the entire Eraser album” to screams of loyal Radiohead fans. Thom’s melodies are exquisite with his juxtaposition lyrics that speak to us in a common language we can all understand. I am still humming “No more talking bout the old days; it’s time to be great” from the song Atoms for Peace.

I was escorted to the sound booth; ‘the island’ as Hal put it, was the best seat in the house. Jered, by my side, was rocking out to this new super group. The company we kept in this sanctuary was Beyonce, Jay-Z, Kate Hudson and a ton of technicians.

Thousands of cell phones illuminated the arena reminding me of a Bangles concert I saw when they sang their #1 hit Eternal Flame. Only then, it was cigarette lighters and about 20 times less people. Nigel’s music is symphonic in an electrical way. Joey’s phenomenal rhythms of double bass electrified us even more. Currents of colors flashed across the stage verifying a brand new experience. So dignified and reserved were my son and his mates at the after-party, now showered and coated in elegant evening attire. A massive array of guests quietly embraced their future with Thom and the band leading the way. My manager, Hal, put it perfectly: “Like Dylan they will have a galvanizing affect on our children and grandchildren.” Hold on, we’re going for a Great ride!

Tweek the Frequency

There’s a whole lot of re-calibrating going on through the music that Thom Yorke‘s new Super Group Atoms For Peace is putting out there. Members of his band include my son Joey, Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Nigel Godrich (Radiohead producer) and percussionist Mauro Refosco. Check out the video of Thom’s solo at Roseland Ballroom in NYC last Monday night.

3D

I was amazed to experience 21st Century 3D in the spectacular Avatar and Tim Burton’s newest contribution to the world of cinema Alice in Wonderland. Oh, to see Johnny Depp break-dance up close and personal! It’s a far cry from the sci-fi days when 3D glasses had cardboard frames. Now we sit in the dark, all looking like Tom Cruise in Risky Business! Ya know, those Ray-Ban shades he wore with his Calvins!

My 6-week stay n L.A. is coming to an end. In my leisure time I had the pleasure of 3D and other Oscar-nominated films such as Crazy Heart, Up In the Air and An Education. Jeff Bridges won me over in his portrayal of a down-trodden country singer who rebounded and cleaned up his act. Didn’t get the girl (Maggie Gyllenhaal), although he did regain his pride. What a surprise to see and hear C0lin Farrell as a country star. Couldn’t be totally faithful to JB when George Clooney is the compassionate job hatchet man. My heart was broken when he didn’t get the girl. Is there a common theme here? Even An Education ran parallel to the one that got away but introduced Carey Mulligan, a fresh face in the crowd.

My packing was interrupted by an interview with a radio network called Premier. One of their syndicated programs I’m familiar with is Delilah. She takes requests from her listeners and always shares her sympathy and humor as she selects the appropriate song for the situation. Don’t exactly know when my sound bites will be aired, or on what show. I’ll let you know when the info is concrete.

Speaking of concrete, next stop is Chicago, my old stomping ground for making Dr Pepper commercials. Hope the Hawaiian tropical influence on me can handle the cold. Time to bundle up.

FUN, FROLIC & FRIENDS

BalboaTheater 2-14-10.jpg

On February 11th the American Cinematheque hosted an evening of Beach Party Movies at the landmark Egyptian Theater in Hollywood with a live performance by ‘me’ and a Q&A by Sheryl Farber of LuxuriaMusic.com. Me and my associate in Hawaii, Charles Brotman, guitarist extraordinaire and owner of Palm Records, co-produced an updated arrangement of a medley of my songs from the films. Maurice Gainen, engineer of my latest album,”Love it Away” was there to assist me with the sound equipment. Much appreciation, Maurice. Thanks to Eric Caiden and Grant Moninger for making it happen and a special thanks to Hal Lifson for enlisting everyone’s support.
Then, on Valentine’s Day ( as well as Chinese New Year; Tiger!) I flew up to San Francisco to sing my medley as well as introduce the title track of my new album at a special showing of Beach Blanket Bingo presented by Will Viharo. Here is the photo of a billboard of the Balboa Theater advertising the evening. Standing with me is my Jered. Hope to see you in the future with more of the same FUN, FROLIC & FRIENDS.
Friends in attendance were: Marlene and Gary, Lan and Pierre + his mom, Celine, Mike and Stephanie, Ross and Bo, and last but not least, Pete.
In addition, thanks Mark, for recording intros for Little Steven’s Underground Garage.

Mother Nature

She is passionately asking us to wake up. Now, with the tragedy in Haiti, our hearts are responding to those who are suffering. We, the citizens of our planet have allowed neglect and exploitation of Mother Nature to the degree that She must remind us who She is.Remember and thank Her every moment for your life; your safety. No destruction man invents is more powerful than Her. Remember Her and show Her gratitude and I believe She will respond favorably. Every moment of gratitude is a building block toward our future well being. Look at the sky, the stars, the moon; acknowledge the cycles of the moon. Share your awareness with someone you know or just in the moment with someone passing by. Take time to watch a sunset. It is gone in a blink and symbolizes a day in your life. Respect the rage of the wind or a calm breeze. Mother Nature is talking to us, did you know?
The magic of human healing has remarkable recovery ability. Collectively we can heal! With the devastating event in Haiti we are tested once again if our hearts will open and remain open. There is much work to be done. I hope Mother Nature cooperates, don’t you?

PEACE

Hope this finds you all well and busily scurrying around preparing for the holidays.

It’s been a very fulfilling time for me. Amidst the chaos on the planet I have managed to find a greater peace. This year, my mother died leaving her legacy for me to march on. At the same time my grandson was born. Now all my children are married and what more can make a mother proud and peaceful.

I’ve been writing my autobiography focusing on my early career and now, Hal, my associate is transcribing what I’ve written so far. 2010 will be a year of music and writing. Soon I will be releasing a new CD called “Love it Away”, the title song of the album, and before years end a very danceable version of  “Love it Away” will be released as a single.

A new practice in my life has manifested emanating from Chennai, India. I feel we are all celestial beings and so I pray and say a mantra everyday to the universe of planets and entities that I call Creator. I find that connecting with the Infinite is very grounding for me. And so, I wish you inner peace and happiness.

Be your own creator.

With love,

DL

HAPPY THANKSGIVING

What does Thanksgiving mean to you? Now, more than ever, let us unite in showing gratitude for LIFE! Isn’t every day a challenge? Now, more than ever, give thanks.

I am so grateful to have been part of my baby Kt’s celebration of marriage. So much appreciation was shown by her family and friends.Flying home to Hawaii, seated next to me was my adorable Jered, husband #2. We danced the night away at the wedding, a Hollywood Glam inspiration. From the Cake Ladies’ gluten-free, sugarless, no-dairy wedding cake adorned in amethyst orchids (so deelicious), to the florist Gilly’s meticulous orchid arrangements under glass, inspired by the bride’s Lanvin heels, every detail was a reflection of the unity about to be sanctified by Rabbi Jay. Her gown melted LW’s heart as he proudly walked her down the isle to meet his future son-in-law. Mom (DL) was amply supplied with enough tissues, but not enough glue to keep those tears of joy from loosening up her false eyelashes. At the helm, navigating the rhythm of the evening was DJ Howie Pyro featuring his favorite genre; 50’s & 60’s rock n roll chosen specifically with our nuptials to perfection.

I first heard Howie’s name when I visited LuxuriaMusic.com** several days before. Actually I was on the Steve and Cheryl Show chatting away while they were spinning a few of my tunes: an absolutely gratifying experience.

The build up to the wedding lead me to the studio to record a few more tunes for my new release in 2010. So much to be thankful for. By the way, if you’re looking for a cool place to stay in LA, try the Crescent Hotel; very boutique, very chic and friendly staff. Ask for Shaw the manager for the best rates in town. Au revoir LA, my family and friends. Returning for Valentines Day.

Love from me  2 u
