Atoms For Peace

afpThe saying Atoms For Peace* originated when President Dwight Eisenhower decided the country had a single impression of the ATOM and that was the BOMB. To change the tide, he began a campaign to inform the public that atomic energy could be used as an instrument of peace..

In the 21st Century, Thom Yorke, Nigel Godrich, Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), my son, Joey Waronker and percussionist Mauro Refosco (Forro In The Dark) formed a new band they call Atoms For Peace.

All of these millenials are conscious beings with intentions of making music to help heal our planet. I saw them perform at Coachella a couple of years ago and witnessed a crowd of 75000 people vibe to Thom’s ethereal voice, Flea’s pulsating bass and physical gyrations and my son Joey, buried beneath a mountain of drums playing intricate rhythms that synchronized with my heart beat. Sensational!

Because Thom and Nigel have commitments to their other group, Radiohead, and Flea with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, it’s taken a while for their first release, but now it is official. A 12″ vinyl will be released soon with two new songs. I Love it. Hope you give it a listen. You just have to dance!

Side A: Listen here to Other Lives – Tamer Animals (Atoms For Peace Remix)

Side B: Listen below to: Atoms For Peace – Other Side (Stuck Together Remix)

*Atoms for Peace was the title of a speech delivered by U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower to the UN General Assembly in New York City on December 8, 1953.

Chances Are you’ll never see Johnny Mathis in a more casual moment. He crashed the party, but Jackie DeShannon doesn’t mind!

“A-wop-bop-a-loo-mop-a-wop-bam-boom!”

Aired on Shindig! 4/28/65. Donna Loren, Bobby Sherman, The Wellingtons, Darlene Love and The Blossoms singing “Tutti Frutti” as part of an opening medley. This 1955 song, co-written and originally recorded by Little Richard, became his first major hit record. With its opening cry of “A-wop-bop-a-loo-mop-a-wop-bam-boom!” (a verbal imitation of a drum pattern that Little Richard had heard) and its hard-driving sound and wild lyrics, it became not only a model for many future Little Richard songs, but also a model for rock and roll itself.

Oatmeal Parfait

“Gruel, nothing but gruel” said Oliver Twist. Sure, a bowl of oatmeal is bland. Until you add your favorite condiments and a delicious creamy milk to it. Why not turn your morning gruel into dessert?

Start with steel cut oatmeal. You only need 1 cup for 4 servings. Boil 4 cups of water with a tsp of salt. At a rolling boil add 1 cup of oatmeal. To that I add 1/4 c Fenugreek. I like it because it aids decongestion. Then  add 1 tsp vanilla extract and 1 tsp cinnamon. Now stir for 30 minutes. Just set up your laptop or iPad nearby. Multi-tasking can be fun and rewarding.

At the 20 minute mark add 1/2 c fresh or frozen blueberries and 1/4 c Hemp seed. Shelled hempseeds are 33% protein, with Omega 3. It will also add a nutty flavor to your porridge. Finally, stir in agave sweetener to taste. I like 3 tblsp.

To assemble your Oatmeal Parfait: choose a wine goblet or ice cream glass so you can see the layers, like a trifle. Put a heaping spoonful of oatmeal in first, followed by a drizzle of Hemp milk and a few berries. Repeat 2 more times and voila!

Make sure your goblet is heat resistant.

Bon Apetit

Q&A with Legendary Songwriter Mike Stoller

Pictures are worth a thousand words. Mike Stoller is not only one of the greatest living American songwriters, but he is a gentleman and a scholar. He shed a tear while reminiscing over his long writing relationship with partner Jerry Leiber who recently passed away. Two kids from New York who have given us memories to last a lifetime.

Songs like Stand By Me, Jailhouse Rock, Hound Dog, Love Potion #9 and a song that I sang in almost every live performance in the 60’s, Kansas City, are only a fraction of the hit tunes Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller wrote together for over sixty years, creating enduring classics in a variety of genres including Rhythm & Blues, Pop, Jazz, Cabaret, and—most notably—Rock & Roll.

After decades, two of the original Fantastic Baggys reunite. Steve Barri and Jered Cargman.

Steve Barri moderated the Mike Stoller Q&A at The Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, May 31st, 2012.
